Preschool Portrait Session/Smithfield, VA

This isn’t just any preschooler! This is my handsome and firey little preschooler! As the kid of a photographer, he is no stranger to the camera. However, he does require a small bribe to capture images like these. Q-Daddy’s mac and cheese does it every time! If you don’t now Q-Daddy’s, you should totally get acquainted! http://www.qdaddysbbq.com SO good!!

Although I know it can sometimes be a struggle to get your little one to cooperate with photos, sometimes the promise of a sweet treat is all that is required. It also really helps to chat with your kids before the session and set expectations. Let them know how important the photos are to you, and how much you love their little faces!

It may also help if you allow them to bring in a favorite toy or doll. The little guys in these photos with my son, are his favorites. We compromised on having them join a few shots and having them sit out for a few shots.

We further compromise with allowing him to choose a few poses or make a silly face! (The photo above is his “scared face” for Halloween! 🙂 ) Remember, every shot may not be a framer, but every shot is a sweet memory of this time in their life.

I also suggest offering to let them see a few shots on the back of the camera during the session, so they can see how great they look! I try to pick a location with some cool things to explore or areas that may draw their attention. We shot these photos in downtown Smithfield, Virginia. http://www.smithfieldva.gov You can check out more of the local and historic spots in Smithfield for more ideas as well.

Of course, this isn’t the first time my little guy has been through his own photo session. I have some that have turned out better than others, yet I treasure them all! He is growing up so quickly. I love not only having these great memories of the milestone moments in his life for myself, but knowing one day his children will enjoy them as well! Isn’t that just as important a reason to invest in these memories? Photos really do become part of a legacy that will be loved by generations to come.

Next year, my sweet boy starts Kindergarten! Stay tuned for more milestone moments!
